We have provided you with a list of materials that are common in most preschool classrooms. Then, ask you students to share their ideas while you write them down.Īs part of the planning process, it is also helpful to show students the materials they can use to build their dens. In addition, you can simply write the plan question “How can you build a den for bear?” on a whiteboard. Therefore, we have provided a planning poster that you can print off. With preschoolers, the most effective way to complete this step is as a whole class. To begin, students use a planning sheet to brainstorm ideas on how to build a den for bear. This process includes three key steps: Plan, Create, and Test. Prepared with their new knowledge of bears, dens, and hibernation, students are now ready to plan their dens! Planning is the first step in what we call The Engineering Process. It also includes telling them the den needs to be strong enough to withstand a windy winter storm. In the Hibernation STEM project, this includes telling students that the den will need an opening big enough for bear to get in and out of. To assist preschoolers with this, teachers present clear specifications of what to include when solving the problem. This begins by giving students time to explore the problem and possible solutions. Once students know the problem they can work to solve it. Therefore, students need to make a den that will last all winter long ( and through any winter storm ).Ĭheck out our other winter stem projects for prek here. Unfortunately, he does not have a cozy den to keep him warm. Check out the problem students need to solve related to hibernation.īrrr! It is getting cold outside! That means it is time for bear to get ready to hibernate. Every STEM activity begins with a problem that needs to be solved.
